From Alghero-Fertilia Airport to the City: Bus, Taxi or Hire Car?

Alghero-Fertilia Airport lies about 10 km from the city. The cheapest way in is the ARST bus, the quickest is a taxi, and a hire car makes sense if you plan to leave Alghero at all. Fares and timetables change, so treat the figures below as what travel guides report and confirm them before you travel.

The three options

OptionTimeCost quoted by travel guidesBest for
ARST bus line 931220 to 30 minutesabout €1 to €2 per ticketOne or two travellers on a budget
Taxi10 to 20 minutesfrom about €25 by day, with a 40 % surcharge at nightGroups, late arrivals, heavy luggage
Hire car15 to 20 minutesdepends on the datesAnyone planning trips beyond the town

The ARST bus

According to one travel guide, the bus stops about 150 metres from the arrivals exit and runs on into Alghero, with a service about every hour. The same guide gives the first bus as 5:13 am. That is a thin timetable: if your flight lands late, do not count on a bus. The fare and the timetable are on the ARST website. Look them up for your date, and have a plan B for a delayed flight.

The taxi

Taxis wait outside the arrivals exit. The guide quotes a fare starting at €25 by day, and a 40 % surcharge for rides between midnight and 7:00 am. A group of four splits a €25 fare to about €6.25 each, still more than a bus ticket, but easier with cases. Ask for the price before you set off, since the final fare depends on the destination.

The hire car

The car hire desks are right outside the arrivals gate, and the drive into town takes 15 to 20 minutes. Whether you need a car depends on what you want to do. Alghero’s old town is a place to walk. The sights around it are a different matter: Capo Caccia has no public transport worth planning around, and Stintino, the departure point for Asinara, is a drive away. You can compare car hire at Alghero airport and in town for your dates. Check the excess and the deposit before you book.

Which one to choose

  • Staying in the old town for a few days: the bus or a taxi. The old town is walkable, and a walking tour of 1.5 hours at €30 per person, rated 4.9 from 98 reviews, is a good first-day introduction.
  • Staying outside the centre or travelling in a group: a taxi, or a hire car if you want to go further.
  • A week with day trips to Capo Caccia or Stintino: a hire car from the airport.
