Alghero Car Hire: What Do Excess, Deposit and Desk Charges Mean?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Do not choose an Alghero hire car from the headline price alone. Open the rental conditions and compare the excess, security deposit, accepted payment cards, fuel policy, mileage and the total for every driver. The excess is your potential contribution after covered damage; the deposit is the amount the company may block as security. They are not the same number, and neither should be guessed. If the conditions are unclear before payment, choose another offer or ask the supplier in writing.
Excess and CDW are not the same as “nothing to pay”
Collision Damage Waiver, usually shortened to CDW, limits liability under stated conditions. It is not a promise that every scratch, tyre, glass part, key or underbody incident is covered. The excess is the amount that may remain your responsibility for a covered claim. Both the amount and the exclusions belong to the exact car and supplier, so this article deliberately gives no “usual” figure.
Extra protection sold by a booking platform can work as reimbursement: the rental company may still charge or retain money, and you later claim it back under that policy. Cover sold at the desk may operate differently. Read who pays first, what evidence is required and which parts of the car are excluded before deciding whether an upgrade is worth it.
The deposit is a card hold, not the excess
At collection, the supplier may pre-authorise a security deposit on the main driver’s card. Check the amount, card type, name requirements and available credit in the rental conditions. A debit card that paid online is not automatically acceptable for the hold at the desk. If the named driver arrives without a qualifying card, the cheap reservation can become unusable or require a costly change.
Ask when the hold is released after return. Your bank controls when released funds become visible again, so do not plan the final days of the holiday around immediate access to that credit.
Four lines that change the total
Fuel policy: “Full to full” means collecting and returning at the stated level. Photograph the gauge and keep the final fuel receipt if the conditions request it.
Additional driver: do not assume a partner can drive because both names appear on travel documents. The driver must be included in the agreement, and any fee should be visible in the total you compare.
Age and licence rules: minimum age, licence-holding period and young-driver charges differ by supplier and vehicle group. Check the booking page; do not rely on a general Sardinia rule.
Collection time: enter the flight number when the booking permits it and read the late-arrival terms. A delayed flight does not automatically keep every desk open or every reservation active.
At the Alghero desk
Bring the documents and card named in the conditions. Before leaving, photograph every side of the car, the wheels, windscreen, interior, fuel gauge and mileage. Make sure existing damage appears on the handover record. On return, follow the stated fuel and key procedure and keep the final paperwork. These steps do not expand cover; they document the condition you accepted and returned.

What to book
Book the offer whose conditions you can actually meet, not the smallest number in the search results. For most travellers that means a manageable deposit on an accepted card, a clearly stated excess, a fuel policy they understand and every intended driver on the contract. If adding protection costs more than the risk is worth to you, decline it; if an uncovered charge would spoil the trip, compare the cover carefully before arrival rather than deciding under pressure at the desk.
